Family traditions are great, even if you don't know why things were done. Something simple my Mom still does to this day, is run the tines of a fork down the length of a cucumber after peeling it, before she slices it up for salads or whatever.

Her Mom taught her that, so she keeps the tradition alive. Far as we can tell, it just makes the cucumber slices a bit more festive when presented on the plate, by why not do that? Little touches are important.

This topic has made me chuckle.

There are so many things I do just because Mom, Granny, or Auntie did. Some of them seem so silly.

One thing granny did I that has always confused me, was when she cut a cucumber, she rubbed the ends of it on the cut ends before she sliced it up and served it. To this day I have no idea why. But I always do it too :)

Soaking the milk in the chicken is something I do because my mom did. Not sure why it makes the chicken taste so delicious but it does. I am going to have to try it your way too E donavan, that sounds like it might bring out a sweet taste in the chicken also.

Something I ALWAYS do, is use Pace picante sauce towards the end of the cooking time, baking, grilling or even sometimes stove top. It has always made the dish taste so much better.

I was raised on my mothers Southern cooking and she insisted that chicken be immersed in cold milk, and refrigerated for 1n hour, or so, before cooking.
She has passed on but any time I make chicken, you can be sure that it has gone through that procedure.
I think it makes the bird tasted just a little bit sweeter.

My wife and our Mom's, all soaked chicken in cold or ice water in preperation to cooking. Regardless if the chicken had been frozen or fresh, it still got it's turn in the cold bath water. If frozen, it stayed in the water until it was thawed out. Also, I believe they applied just a dab of salt to the water. I once ask my wife why she soaked the chicken in water like that and I believe she said, "Because my Mom did it, and she told me to do it this way in order to draw any blood out of the meat and to give the meat a good firm fresh meat look and feel". Sounds good to me!

My husband soaks chicken pieces in ice water before grilling. This helps keep the chicken moist and juicy. Use your pace sauce on the last 15 minutes of grilling and chicken will be great!
